Saltwater Athletics: CrossFit, Strength & Conditioning.

Physical movement is a major component of our approach, as a wealth of research reveals it has a positive impact on mental health and overall wellness.
In the midst of 2020’s pandemic, Surfside’s team built Saltwater Athletics, a now 6,500+ square foot space for our participants to participate in CrossFit classes and open gym. Outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment, all CrossFit classes are taught by coaches with a CrossFit Level 1 or Level 2 Certification… many of whom are people in recovery & Surfside graduates!
Our participants access Saltwater Athletics 6 days a week for private classes coached by a certified trainer, as well as “open gym” hours. For more information on exercise as a tool to build community, enhance relapse prevention & improve drug-induced neurological damages, click here
Saltwater Athletics offers memberships to the general community, allowing participants to build a network of friends who are not in recovery. We’ve found this is a healthy space for people to socialize based on common interests, reducing social anxiety, improving overall health and developing a meaningful hobby.
INTEGRATING MOVEMENT WITH ADDICTION RECOVERY
We don’t just integrate exercise because it’s something to do – we utilize daily movement because studies reveal that regular moderate and high intensity exercise can decrease cravings, improve self-reported depression/anxiety, and start to rebuild substance-induced neurological damage.
The social aspects of the 12-step fellowship are carried over into group fitness. Our participants learn to encourage one another, step outside of their comfort zone, and boost self-esteem as they build strength and skill. It’s another area where men can learn to socialize without substances.
