In 2023, men’s addiction recovery faces unique challenges as it adapts to the ever-changing landscape of today’s world. We believe in the power of men’s addiction recovery and have adjusted our program to meet the needs of men seeking recovery. For the team at Surfside, integrating community support and technology is critical to creating sustainable, fulfilling recovery.

Adjusting to Social Anxiety with a Supportive Community:

Men’s addiction recovery requires a warm and accepting community, acknowledging the hurdles of social anxiety that many young adults currently face. Surfside has recognized this challenge and utilizes a powerful network of men who understand the journey to sobriety. Rather than sending newcomers to random meetings to find sponsors, Surfside invites 2-3 men in recovery to visit the house, introducing themselves and engaging in conversations with new residents. We’ve found this approach removes the anxiety of approaching strangers and provides a nurturing “warm handoff.”

Not only do we assist our residents in finding a homegroup, we also arrive to meetings early and leave ample time post-meeting for the residents to fellowship.  The idea of “fellowshipping” ranges – it might mean lingering outside a meeting to talk to other men, or heading to a local restaurant for a late bite to eat or cup of coffee with a few alumni.  We intentionally select meetings where we know they will be welcomed with open arms because we know each meeting can be vastly different. Though the role of our support staff is to create accountability, they’re also committed to easing anxiety for our residents. For example, they’ll take the time to introduce our residents to other folks at meetings to hopefully ease the burden of approaching a stranger.

Leveraging Technology for Enhanced Support:

The post-pandemic world has embraced technology as a means of communication, and Surfside has utilized it to provide wraparound services for residents and their families. Because we understand the value of family support, Surfside launched a virtual family support group in 2020 that has flourished. Families with sons entering the program interact with parents whose sons have already completed the program, creating a bond despite geographical distances. Through virtual meetings week after week, families in different stages of their recovery journey find solace and support.

Men’s addiction recovery in 2023 requires adjustments that accommodate the unique challenges presented in today’s world. Surfside’s program embraces community support and leverages technology to create a sustainable, fulfilling recovery experience. By fostering a supportive network for residents AND their families, Surfside aims to empower men to overcome social anxiety and build connections that promote lasting recovery. By adapting to the demands of the present, men’s addiction recovery can bring transformative change to individuals and their families.
