Addiction recovery is a complex journey filled with both challenges and triumphs.  Professionals in the field understand that recovery requires resilience, fortitude, and a dynamic approach to healing.  At Surfside, we’ve tapped into a wealth of research that recognizes the positive impact of fitness on the recovery process.  Integrating fitness into addiction recovery not only enhances physical health, but also serves as a catalyst for growth in all areas of a person’s life. We see fitness and addiction recovery as valuable and deeply intertwined, so we’re going to dig a little deeper.

The Chemistry of Addiction and Fitness

Before delving into the role of fitness in addiction recovery, it is essential to briefly highlight the chemistry behind addiction. Substance use alters brain chemistry, causing the brain to rely on the mind/mood altering substance for pleasure and emotional regulation. But there’s a tremendous amount of research indicating that fitness also positively impacts brain chemistry. Regular exercise (even in small doses) releases endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, which contribute to feelings of happiness, reduced stress, and an overall sense of well-being. In early recovery, these neurochemicals can counteract post-acute withdrawal symptoms, cravings and negative emotions.

Rebuilding the Mind-Body Connection

Folks in early recovery from addiction often report that they’ve totally lost their sense of self. There’s frequently a disconnection between the mind and body coupled with dissociation from emotions and thoughts. By engaging in fitness activities, which can range from CrossFit to yoga or skateboarding, we begin to bridge the gap between mind and body.  We build participation in activities into our daily structure, making it a habit to disconnect from the world (and the phone and social media) and stay in the present moment.  This helps our residents to engage with their own thoughts and emotions, offering increased self-awareness.

Structure and Routine

Addiction recovery often requires drastic lifestyle changes, which are quite far outside of our comfort zone. We’ve discovered that during times of revolutionary change, fitness can offer a much-needed sense of structure and routine. In recovery, we’re often told to “bring the mind and the body will follow.” By committing to working out or moving the body at a certain time each day, we find folks discover a sense of purpose and direction. Furthermore, the discipline required to maintain a fitness routine can spill over into other aspects of life, helping people stay focused on their recovery journey.

Community and Support

We know that the simple sense of fellowship in a 12-Step community can offset feelings of isolation. Identifying a shared hobby can be another extension of fellowship, fostering healthy relationships.  We know that connecting over shared interests can be a catalyst for deeper, more meaningful interactions. Participation in activities like CrossFit introduces people in early recovery to others who are prioritizing their health and well-being. It becomes increasingly clear that substance use will impede on personal goals surrounding health and fitness and these outside communities can offer a unique sense of motivation.  These communities also help our Surfside residents learn to develop healthy friendships with people who may not be in recovery! It’s a great outlet to foster a sense of belonging and support, which reduces the feeling of being isolated and terminally unique.

So what’s our take?

We’re believers that fitness is a potent force that can complement and enhance addiction recovery. By harnessing the positive effects of exercise on brain chemistry, rebuilding the mind-body connection, reducing stress, instilling structure, and fostering a supportive community, individuals will discover a transformative journey towards recovery.. Incorporating fitness into addiction recovery can help individuals not only overcome their struggles but also unlock their full potential for growth, leading to a happier and healthier future.
